These newer designed Low Riders perform extremely well and are very ruggedly built. I also had a couple of the older designed one and had one of them making bottoming noises right out of the box. No such problems with these newer ones. I installed them in a couple of Seismic Audio Sub boxes that I added some extra inside bracing and a moderate amount of carpet pad to...electronic digital crossover, sounds awesome. 2 more than up to the task of most DJ gigs and good for stage and concert up to 400-500 people.

This speaker is used in a bass reflex subwoofer enclosure.
It is used in a DJ rig, but not extensively (2-3 times per month), loud but far from clipping or speaker rated power.
It performed well for nearly a year, until it started not working well... The voice coil connection is damaged, the speaker cuts in an out randomly, making it useless for its purpose.
I give this speaker a bad grade for reliability and I give Peavey zero stars for their customer support: I have given them a detailed account of the problem (with picture) and have not even received an acknowledgement, let alone any pointers on how to fix this (or offer to replace...)
This is the last time I am buying anything from Peavey. You DO get what you pay for, I guess.
(PE still get 5 stars for everything)

All I can say is what an amazing driver for the money. I use this as a subwoofer for home theater in a 10 cu ft ported enclosure with eq of 5 dB @ 25Hz and a subsonic filter via an older PE 250W plate amplifier. This driver does a great job for movies and music both. Those who say this speaker doesn't work in a large box obviously haven't spent time tuning it properly. This unit is replacing and older Dayton PF-460 18" woofer. The Dayton was good, but this unit is even better controlled and has a little more maximum output capability before distortion sets in. Highly recommended!

I have one of these in production for my shows. I custom built a 6th order bandpass for this driver. First night out, just this one sub with 500 watts from one side of a QSC RMX2450 was rattling the ceiling tiles and windows in a 15k square foot venue. I bought this driver for reliability, value, and the replaceable basket. In the year that I have been using it, it's been abused, over loaded, and generally treated very badly. I am happy to report that I have come to know that if anything in my rig works, it will be this sub.

I use this in a 4 cu.ft. sealed enclosure for home theater. It fills in the 50-120hz area that true home theater subs usually lack, although this sub sounds great on its own down to 30hz. My tiny mains are weak from 80hz down so this Peavey does a great job there. I use it in conjunction with the TC Sounds pro 5100, which covers the 20-70hz area very well. It's amazing how the Peavey keeps up with the TC sounds driver in terms of sound quality. I was hoping the TC 5100 would have tight punchy bass from 60-120hz but it seems to be a little sluggish there, typical subwoofer. If I could go back, I would have not spent so much money on the TC 5100 (although it's an excellent driver) and would have bought a few cheaper Dayton Titanic 12's or something which would have probably filled the 20-50hz region just as well.
As a side note, I own 5 TC sounds subs ranging from 10's to 18's and I still prefer the sound of this Peavey for both music and movies, even though it really only gets down to 30hz on its own. It has that tight chest slam in the 60-100hz region that you just don't get from most home audio subwoofers. Use it in conjunction with a true high x-max subwoofer for the deep stuff and let this Peavey sing from 40hz or 50hz on up!

New enclosure
Posted January 15, 2013
I just sold my TC sounds pro 5100 driver but kept its ported enclosure. I had this driver laying around so I put it in to see how it would sound. It is not an ideal size (it's 7 cubic feet and ends up being tuned to 22hz), but WOW it sounds excellent. I like it better than the 5100, although it won't go as loud of course. It has tons of output from 20-30hz with no audible harmonic distortion, surprisingly clean. I didn't know this driver could dig so low. It still has excellent transient response and hits hard. I would highly recommend using this enclosure size and tuning for a home theater sub, as well as music!

We at the Metal Factory sound and Club Chrome in Springfield, Illinois have always sworn by peavey Black Widow speakers. We have recently upgraded all our subs from the BWX to the new lowriders. The bass from these speakers is amazing, enough to please the national acts we do at our club. They perform right up there with more expensive subs. Just ast any of our long list of national act performers, including, Tyrese Gibson, Scarface, Them Franchise Boys, Chengy, Vanilla Ice, Ice Tea, Seven Mary Three, and the AC/DC tribute band Hells Bells. Thanks to Peavey and Parts Express for a great product.

One of the two drivers broke the feed wire at the terminal rendering it useless at a gig. Contacted Peavey and they claimed it may have been an older unit. They sent a replacement basket and this one's wire also broke at same location. I would repair it but these wires are not copper-based. More of a fabric with conductor weave. Can't repair it. Honestly, I gave them a shot and will not go back to Peavey for any other products. Had my doubts prior to purchase anyway. Now those doubts are proven.

After looking at the spec's for the 18" JBL's which my buddy has, I ended up buying one of these and built a custom cabinet close to the dimentions of a Peavey 18" box. I love the bass that comes out of such a small cabinet, well small for an 18" sub. Only running one right now on my DJ setup, but plan to purchase another after some upgrades to my Mid and High's...

I needed new subs for one of my PAs. I needed a sub that could take a ton of power and would fit the custom boxes I already had in the club. I checked these out do to a friend telling me he was pulling out his JBLs and installing these in his PA. I am glad I did these speaker bang all night and just ask for more.

Tried Low Rider in several different boxes. only ONE yielded satisfactory results and that was a 24in X 24in cube with two 4" ports in the REAR. in this enclose i cannot believe how hard this thing kicks. handles every one of the 1000w delivered via CROWN amp. not a good sub in a large ported or small sealed box.

I shopped around quite a bit comparing performance parameters of many speakers. My baseline was an expensive JBL and this speaker align well with it. We've had one gig using the Peavey and I am very pleased with it so far. Don't know how long it will last but it sounds great.
